With every new year comes a new Alternative Miss Ireland, and in just a few weeks we stage the 16th pageant of desperate glamour at the Olympia Theatre on Sunday March 14. Tickets go on sale February—get your wigs dusted! In the meantime, we are currently producing a book for Mexico City boy Stefan Brüggemann—it’s french-folded in grey paper and features a deep-blue slip-case with mirror silver foil—it should be a thing of hard beauty. Which is also what can be said for Simon Pope’s new work Memory Marathon which is a 12-hour relay from dawn until dusk featuring 104 east Londoners that walk with Pope on a spiraling route—setting off in Thamesmeade and culminating at the construction site of the 2012 Olympic stadium in Stratford. We have been producing the various graphic elements for the film he made of the event, and the associated publications and exhibition. Produced by Film and Video Umbrella, it’s a stunning portrait of London as it lumbers towards the future, told through very local memories. Design has started on Isaac Julien’s book about Langston Hughes—part archive, part academic and part art, it examines Julien’s film, Looking for Langston and how that transposes a Harlem of the 1920s and a London of the 1980s through the tinted gaze of male desire… Described as “the 21st century looking back on the detritus of the 20th”, we are designing for The Rooms which is the new collaborative project between New York based film maker Paul Rowley and Tim Blue. And, with Artangel, on another film project The Arbor, which is about Andrea Dunbar, the writer of Rita, Sue and Bob Too. And if that isn’t enough for you, Oberman Knocks is sweating over some new musical works to be released, along with some video pieces, later this year… can’t wait for Alice (no, not that one—wait and see…)
