“the most beautiful, intense, in the spirit of the artist catalogue I think I’ve ever seen”
— Olivia Laing

Derek Jarman was a very English rebel. A maverick and radical artist, his unique and distinctive voice was honed protesting against the social and political establishment in post-war Britain. With unbounded creative rage, ingenuity and sheer personal charm he defined bohemian London life in the 60s; exploded into queer punk in the 70s; and in the 80s and 90s, in the age of AIDS, he triumphed over an atmosphere of fear and ignorance to produce works of art which continue to resonate strongly today. This publication accompanied a major retrospective at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Manchester Art Gallery, Yale Center for British Art, Void Derry and John Hansard Gallery. It offers a definitive overview of Derek Jarman’s life and work, covering all aspects of his oeuvre, from his feature films to his Super 8s, his painting, design for theatre, poetry, gardening, memoir and political activism.
